Based on Manik Bandyopadhyay’s novel by the same name, Padma Nadir Majhi is a story set in 1947 India when partition was yet to happan. Kuber (Raisul Islam Asad) is a poor Hindu fisherman who has a crippled wife Mala (Champa), a daughter and a newly born boy. Hossain Miya (Utpal Dutt) is a big businessman of the village and intends to make a little utopia on an island Moynadeep in the Padma Delta. Hossain Miya however needs fishermen to visit his island so that he can expand his business. He somehow manages to convince Kuber to do the job. On his visits to the island, Kuber realises that Moynadep will be a good place to reside in. Opportunity presents itself when partition happens and Kuber on lookout for a place to go. But two of his Moynadeep returned friends Rasu (Sunil Mukherjee) and Aminuddin (Rabi Ghosh) have horror stories to share from the island. A few days later a storm hits the village ransacking it. As an immediate outcome, his daughter’s marriage alliance with a local boy gets called off. Rasu offers to marry her but Kuber declines as there is a huge age gap between the two. Rasu gets furious and pledges to destroy Kuber. Well…he succeeds. Kuber is arrested by the police on account of theft. He goes to Hossain miya for support who agrees to help but in return Kuber must go to Moynadeep. Kuber agrees to the offer and goes to Moynadeep. A new life unfolds for him there.
